Gimkit is a concept introduction and review tool that can be utilized in any classroom; it is similar to a cross between Quizlet and Kahoot! but has some features that neither of them has. Gimkit’s live gameplay is exciting and fast-paced, but when it’s given as homework, it plays more like flash cards. It’s simple to get started; look for kits (question sets) made by other users and edit or modify them for your purposes. Additionally, you can import pre-existing question sets from spreadsheets or other flashcard platforms into Gimkit.

Gimkit is a product designed for teachers, but the experience is very student-centered, having been created by a high school student. Students compete on the Gimkit game-show platform in the classroom by using their electronic devices to answer questions.

Students don’t earn points in the game; instead, they earn virtual currency that they can “invest” to raise their score. Games can be assigned as solitary practice or played in real-time. Students can play in a web browser on any internet-connected device by connecting via game codes or a classroom account.

Students can work together in groups or as a class, or they can compete against one another. Teachers select from several play modes and establish in-game parameters when they first launch the game. Before the game starts, students in KitCollab mode contribute questions that help shape the game. Following each game, teachers can access and download comprehensive student reports.

Features

1- Unique Quiz feature

Gimkit is very similar to other game show applications, but it also feels very different. It appears to be a fairly standard quiz platform at first, but further investigation reveals some interesting features. The money and power-ups may be the most intriguing to students. As they play, students can choose to “invest” the money they win (or lose) in upgrades and power-ups. Options like second chances or increasing earning potential to get paid more for each right answer are examples of power-ups. Power-ups can be disabled if they become too distracting, but they also add variety and interest to the game.

2- Interactive Platform For Students & Teachers

By using the KitCollab feature, students can assist you in building a kit in a matter of minutes by submitting their questions. With little preparation, you can incorporate an interactive review game into your lesson with ease.

3- Benefits for Teachers

Instructors can assign homework by using the assignments feature. Instructors assign a deadline, and pupils complete the kit at their speed, responding to questions until they accomplish a predetermined objective. GimKit makes work easier for teachers & therefore simplifies their life as well.

4- Several Game Modes

There are numerous game modes in Gimkit, some of which are only accessible for a short period. While the Classic and Team modes are extremely basic, other modes draw inspiration from well-known titles like “The Floor is Lava,” “Humans vs. Zombies,” and “Trust No One.” It might take some trial and error to find the ideal balance between game modes and your learning objectives. Use the setup options to adjust the platform to your classroom’s needs and turn on/off features if the games inside the game start to become too intrusive. Remember that the post-game report contains two sets of results: the student’s performance in the game and their accuracy in answering the questions.

5- Unique Kits that help students grow & learn effectively

The questions are divided into several sections, or “kits.” Using Gimkit Live in the classroom has several advantages, one of which is that students can respond to questions more than once, even after they have the answer correct. Instead of just skimming the surface, this feature helps guarantee that they grasp concepts and key focus areas. Additionally, it guarantees that pertinent information is retained in their minds and helps them recall it for longer periods.

6- Acts like a hub of data for teachers:

Gimkit has its advantages for teachers in addition to providing an enjoyable learning experience for students. Specifically, it gives them information that will enable each of their students to learn more efficiently. Teachers can see data that illustrates what the class as a whole may need to spend more time working on and what they have a firm grasp of once they enter their Gimkit login. Additionally, it creates customized reports for each child, allowing teachers to concentrate more on any areas that still require improvement.

How To Join A Class In GimKit:

  • Use your Google account or email address to authenticate.
  • And that’s it! It’s official—you’re enrolled in your teacher’s class!

Pros & Cons of GimKit:

Pros:

Students are engaged and motivated to keep playing the game because of its upgrades and power-ups.

Questions can be quickly imported from CSV files or pre-existing Quizlet Live sets.

Kits can be given as homework so that students can work on them at their own pace.

Cons:

  • It’s a constrained method of instruction; if you want your students to engage in group projects rather than being separated from one another and engrossed in screens, this is not possible.
  • Limited-time free edition and there can only be one edit per kit and five kits total with the free subscription.
  • GimKit has a very basic user interface as the platform does not provide audio or multiple-choice answers; it only provides multiple-choice questions.
  • Unlike Kahoot’s review process, incorrect answers are simply followed by the correct response without an explanation of the error.
  • If there aren’t enough questions, the game may become tedious due to its length or its total combined length and repetition of questions.
  • There can only be one edit and five kits in the free version.

Verdict:

There is a console game-like element that rewards answering questions, and the game type you choose will determine this.  For instance, the gif above shows the “Snowbrawl” version of the game, in which players use snowballs to shoot each other as they run around (think Super Smash Brothers). You can replenish your snowball ammo by correctly answering quiz questions. It works best when formative assessment is lightly introduced while the children are pretending to play. Since it essentially keeps the kids busy with a video game, it’s a good way to get some rest during the day if you want some time off.
