Death of Maharashtra’s Former CM: Legacy of Manohar Joshi

The former CM of Maharashtra – Manohar Joshi passed away in a Mumbai hospital due to cardiac arrest. He was eighty-six. His cardiac episode left him quite sick. The finest medical attention was being given to him while he was in the intensive care unit (ICU). Mr. Joshi’s funeral will take place later today at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park Crematorium. On Wednesday, Mr. Joshi was taken to Mumbai’s PD Hinduja Hospital.

Early life: 

Joshi, who was born in the coastal Konkan district of Maharashtra on December 2, 1937, completed his undergraduate studies in civil engineering at the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute in Mumbai. His association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh marked the start of his political career. In the 1980s, he became involved with the Shiv Sena and became one of the party’s main leaders.

The wife of former CM – Anagha Manohar Joshi passed away in 2020 at the age of 75. Two girls and a son survive him. From 1995 until 1999, he led Maharashtra as chief minister, becoming the first member of the Shiv Sena to hold the position after it was split. In addition to being elected as a member of parliament, Manohar Joshi served as speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2002 and 2004.

Joshi’s political career:

Before stepping into politics in 1967, he started as a teacher. Manohar Joshi started as a teacher He spent more than 40 years in the Shiv Sena’s employ. The former CM served as Mumbai’s Municipal Councillor for almost 4 years and as the Standing Committee Chairman in 1970. In addition, he was Mumbai’s mayor from 1976 to 1977 for a year.

In 1972, he was chosen to serve in the Maharashtra Legislative Council. In 1990, Mr. Joshi was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly following three terms of service in the Legislative Council. In the Maharashtra Assembly, he also held the office of Leader of the Opposition from 1990 to 1991. On a Shiv Sena ticket, he won the 1999 General elections, representing the Mumbai North-Central Lok Sabha Constituency.

Tributes to Manohar Joshi:

Manohar Joshi, the former chief minister of Maharashtra and speaker of the Lok Sabha, received tributes from political figures. Ajit Pawar, the deputy chief minister, declared, “A leader fighting for the rights of Marathi people has passed into the pages of history.” Joshi, according to NCP founder Sharad Pawar, was seen as a direct leader who made an effort to complete tasks. “Sadly, Manohar Joshi passed away,” he remarked. Within the political community, he was well-known for his audacious work style and candor. He told ANI that Manohar Joshi was regarded by Shiv Sena leader Balasaheb Thackeray as a highly reliable colleague.

From the first non-Cong CM of Maharashtra to Lok Sabha speaker, this journey has seen many ups and downs. Till the last breath,  our former CM has been loved by many for his enthusiasm, empathy, and hard-working nature. Many big personalities including PM Modi gave his tributes to the former CM.
