The famous Academy Awards were held on March 10, 2024. The venue chosen for this 96th edition was Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The AMPAS was the presenter of the award show. The Oscars were given out in 23 categories. The event was directed by the famous Hamish Hamilton.
It had famous producers like Raj Kapoor, Molly McNearney, and Katy Mullan. After hosting the show for three consecutive years (the 89th in 2017, the 90th in 2018, and the 95th in 2023), comedian Jimmy Kimmel is back for his fourth time as the host.
The nominees and the winners:
In the event, it was Oppenheimer who won not only hearts but awards as well. The movie managed to take home 7 Academy Awards, including best picture. The film is a biographical account. It is based on the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer. He is the man who invented the atomic bomb. It won awards for Best Director and Best Film Editing. It also took away awards for Best Cinematography, Best Score, and Best Acting.
Then it was Disney’s “Poor Things” that took home four awards. The award for Best Production Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling was taken by them. The Best Actress and Best Costume Design were also won by ‘Poor Things’. Robert Downey Jr. won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Oppenheimer” as Lewis Strauss. The best actor was won by his co-star Cillian Murphy.
It was none other than Emma Stone who took home the Best Actress award. It was her second time as a winner. She won the award for her part in “Poor Things,”. Despite Greta Gerwig’s disqualification from the directing category for “Barbie,” the movie managed to win best original song with Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell’s “What Was I Made For?”
It was Da’Vine Joy Randolph who won the 1st Oscar of the night. She won the award for the best supporting actress. She performed the role of a boarding school cafeteria manager. The manager was shown as mourning the death of her son. The death happened due to the Vietnam War. The director of the movie “The Holdovers” is Alexander Payne.
Not to miss moments:
Jimmy was seen making biting comedic beats. he often mentioned the past Oscars mishaps, including the accidental announcement of “La La Land” as best picture. In addition, a completely nude John Cena made fun of an Oscar streaker by announcing the best costume prize.
There came a sad moment for all the Indians when “to kill a tiger” did not win. The Canadian documentary To Kill a Tiger, which was made by filmmaker Nisha Pahuja, suffered a major defeat in the Documentary Feature Film category.
Sunday’s Academy Awards, which were held in an election year, were marred by politics and protest as anti-Gaza protests erupted outside the theatre.
The Best Picture category’s mandated diversity requirements were introduced this year. The Academy developed a set of “representation and inclusion standards” in June 2020 as part of its Academy Aperture 2025 program. A film has to meet these standards in order to be eligible to participate in the category.
