The second season of the Women’s Premier League, a women’s franchise Twenty20 cricket league run by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will take place in 2024. For sponsorship purposes, the league is also known as the TATA WPL 2024.

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is expected to hold its second edition from February 22 to March 17. Nonetheless, with consideration for the logistical difficulties, the event will take place in “one state” this time around, as stated by Jay Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The competition is scheduled to begin in February and will take place in a single state. This time, logistics are crucial to our strategy. We will figure it out the next time,” Shah said to reporters on Saturday following the auction. There was earlier talk that Bengaluru and Mumbai might host the tournament. Shah did not specifically specify the location of the matches, though. Bengaluru, Uttar Pradesh, is here. We can host matches in so many locations. After a few years, we can do it in Vadodara, Rajkot, and Ahmedabad in Gujarat as well,” he stated.

Though Shah stated that a decision will be made after consulting the franchises, Maharashtra is still the front-runner to host the games, with three venues in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai and one in Pune.

WPL (Women’s Premier League) Auction List

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released the official lineup of players for the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction. On December 9, 2023, Mumbai will play host to the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 auction. A total of 165 cricket players will have their names included in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction. There is a wage cap of Rs. 13.5 crore that each team can spend at the upcoming WPL 2024 auction.

This ranking comprises 104 Indian women athletes and 61 international athletes, of whom 15 are from associate nations. The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 auction list consists of 109 uncapped players and 56 capped players. The sixty players that the five teams—Mumbai, Delhi, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Giants, and UP Warriorz—kept before the auction include twenty-one international cricketers. Apart from that, the teams have terminated the contracts of 29 players.

Allocate a total of 30 slots, with 9 designated for international players. The maximum initial outlay is Rs 50 lakh. Deandra Dottin of the West Indies and Kim Gart of Australia were the only players to opt to compete in the top bracket.

On the bidding list are four athletes, each with an initial offer of Rs 40 lakh. Twenty-one international cricket players are among the sixty players that five teams have retained. Simultaneously, thirty-nine players were removed from their current teams. Each club’s wage expenditure during the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction is limited to Rs. 13.5 crore.

WPL Selection Of Teams

The five T20 cricket teams competing for the WPL 2024 trophy have been decided upon, with the Women’s Premier League 2024 auction coming to an end in Mumbai. At the WPL 2024 auction, 165 players—104 Indians and 61 foreigners—went under the hammer, but teams could only select 30 of them at random. The WPL 2024 auction had a lot of surprises in store. Unsurprisingly, no one bid for big names like Chamari Athapaththu, Deandra Dottin, or Kim Garth. However, uncapped players like Vrinda Dinesh and Kashvee Gautam made headlines when bids exceeding INR 1 crore were placed.

WPL Selection Of Teams

A total of INR 2.00 crore was paid by all-rounder Kashvee Gautam to Gujarat Giants, making her the joint most expensive player at the auction with Australian international Annabel Sutherland, who was signed by Delhi Caps. Meanwhile, Karnataka batter Vrinda Dinesh signed a contract worth a whooping INR 1.3 crore to join the UP Warriorz.

In WPL history, Kashvee Gautam is also the most costly uncapped player. The two other bids in the crore bracket were Australian all-rounder Phoebe Litchfield (who fetched INR 1 crore from the Gujarat outfit) and South African speedster Shabnim Ismail (who joined reigning champions Mumbai Indians for INR 1.20 crore).
