Most people are aware of steroids. The simple understanding of UK steroids is that they are used for muscle gain by bodybuilders and athletes. However, not many people know that there are two types of steroids. Steroids used by athletes and bodybuilders are called anabolic steroids. On the other hand, steroids used for medical purposes are called corticosteroids.

Corticosteroids are different from anabolic steroids. While anabolic steroids are devoured for muscle gain, weight loss, and other physical changes, corticosteroids are devoured for anti-inflammatory purposes.

What are corticosteroids?

The primary function of corticosteroids is to reduce or prevent inflammation caused by several diseases. Corticosteroids are also known as artificial cortisol. Cortisol is a type of hormone naturally produced in the human body. This hormone is manufactured by the adrenal gland present in the body.

When a person consumes corticosteroids, it increases the amount of cortisol present in the person’s body. This increase in the amount of cortisol performs two vital functions in the person’s body.

The first function is anti-inflammation. Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory. Due to this, this type of steroid can reduce the secretion of inflammatory chemicals in the person’s body. This reduction in inflammation also results in the reduction of tissue damage occurring in the person’s body.

The second function performed by corticosteroids is the reduction of the immune response. Immune response reduction is very important when a person is suffering from an autoimmune disease.

Autoimmune diseases are a type of disease in which the immune system of a person attacks the healthy cells of the body instead of the infected cells. This results in further depletion of the patient’s health.

In such situations, corticosteroids can be of great help as they reduce the immune response of the patient’s body. It leads to a reduction in the attacks occurring on the healthy cells of the person further ensuring the betterment of the person’s health.

When does a doctor prescribe corticosteroids?

UK steroids or corticosteroids can be prescribed by a doctor for several conditions. However, the doctor always has to consider important factors before deciding if a patient should consume steroids and if yes which type of steroid it should be.

The first factor to take under consideration is the patient’s age. Age is a deciding factor when it comes to corticosteroids. Only a person who belongs to a specific age category can consume corticosteroids.

If the person is too young, consumption of corticosteroids might be dangerous for them. Similarly, if the person is too old, corticosteroids might lead to adverse side effects that might hamper the person’s health.

The second important factor to consider before prescribing corticosteroids is the medication the patient is already consuming. If the patient is consuming some type of medication already, it might react with corticosteroids. This reaction might lead to severe side effects in the patient.

To avoid such risky situations, the doctor should always take a look at the patient’s medical history before prescribing any type of corticosteroids to the patient. If the patient is not consuming anything that could react with the corticosteroid, then only the doctor should advise the patient to consume corticosteroids.

The third factor decides which type of UK steroids or corticosteroids should be prescribed to the patient. This factor is the disease that the patient is suffering from. The intensity and type of disease play an important role in deciding the type of steroid they should intake.

If the severity of the disease is high, the patient might be asked to consume a heavier dose of corticosteroids. On the other hand, if the disease is not very intense, they might be asked to consume a light number of corticosteroids.

Another factor that decides whether the person should consume corticosteroids is alternative options for treatment. If there are alternative ways of treating the patient’s disease, the doctor must discuss them with the patient before prescribing any type of corticosteroids.

If the patient chooses to consume corticosteroids then only the doctor can prescribe any type of corticosteroids to the patient. If the patient chooses to go with other treatment options, the doctor has to agree with the patient and go for that option.

The fifth factor that determines whether a person should consume UK steroids or corticosteroids is other medical conditions the person might be suffering from. If the patient is suffering from any other medical condition, the doctor has to confirm that the consumption of corticosteroids will not affect the other medical condition of the patient negatively.

Only after making sure that corticosteroids do not have any negative effects on other medical conditions of the patient, the doctor can prescribe any type of corticosteroids to the patient.

Which medical conditions can be treated with corticosteroids?

Apart from autoimmune diseases, corticosteroids can be used to treat other medical conditions as well. Some medical conditions are lung disorders, organ transplants, allergies, musculoskeletal pain, etc. One most significant medical condition that can be treated with corticosteroids.

When a person is suffering from any type of lung disorder, there is inflammation in their lungs and airways. Corticosteroids are used to treat and reduce the inflammation caused by these lung disorders.

In the case of lung disorders, the most common type of corticosteroids is the ones that can be inhaled. It is because inhaling corticosteroids ensures the maximum number of corticosteroids reaching the patient’s lungs and airways. Some of the common lung disorders treated with corticosteroids are COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.

Corticosteroids are also used when a person undergoes some kind of organ transplant. When a person receives a transplanted organ, their immune system might see the organ as a foreign object that is risky for the body. Hence, the immune system might start attacking the transplanted organ which is risky for the patient.

To avoid this lethal situation, patients who undergo organ transplants are treated with corticosteroids. This is because corticosteroids reduce the immune response of the body which gives time for the body to accept and adjust to the newly transplanted organ.
