With the short days of winter, there’s a desperation to let in as much natural light as possible. But as the days get longer with spring making its gradual return, it’s still important to brighten your home with natural light. There’s just more of it!

But why is it important to increase the natural light entering your home? Well, the main thing is that it’s healthier and cost-effective. A home illuminated by natural light immediately brightens your mood, making you happier and creating a welcoming environment. You’ll also save money on electricity because you’ll be opening your curtains or blinds instead of turning on the lights in your home.

Windows

If you have the budget and the willingness to, you can install new large windows and even skylights. This is easily the best way to increase the flow of natural light into your home. However, it isn’t possible for everyone.

Window dressings can also block light from getting inside. Make sure to open your curtains and blinds all the way to allow more daylight in. Consider choosing blinds that roll up or can be opened easily and curtain hooks or ties to get your curtains out of the way.

You should also minimise how busy your windowsills are. If they’re overcrowded, sunlight can get trapped behind items like plants and photographs.

Don’t forget to keep your windows clean! It’s easy to forget how much dirt and grime can block out the light, so make sure to keep an eye out. A good clean can instantly brighten your home.

Light Colours

You should consider getting rid of any wallpaper and dark colours in favour of light colours. These tones reflect natural light better, letting it bounce off the walls and brighten your space. Choose off-white shades, creams and pastels as they have a warmth to them. Avoid using white though as it can make your home feel cold.

Subdued hues will also act as a neutral backdrop for your furniture.

Flooring

With the right flooring, you can reflect sunlight off them, bouncing it around your space. Wooden, stone, ceramic or laminate flooring with polished finishes are the perfect choices for this; reflecting better than carpets. Regardless of the material you choose, you’ll want to stick with lighter colours for a brighter feel.

However, it’s important to note that direct sunlight can lead to the colour fading over time.

Reflective Decoration

Decorate with metallic, glass and mirrored accessories to help spread natural sunlight throughout your home.

With careful and strategic placements, you can reflect light throughout your space, creating an illusion of space. The main thing to remember is that you need to find the right balance; you don’t want to overwhelm your space with too much reflection.

Furniture Layout

The arrangement of your furniture is a key player in minimising the natural light throughout your home

You’ll want to avoid blocking windows with your furniture and avoid casting shadows, which can obstruct the flow of natural light. You could move your furniture away from the windows too; sofas don’t have to be pushed against the wall after all!

Consider low-profile or transparent furniture pieces that allow light to pass through, maintaining an open and airy feel within the room. Avoiding bulky furniture as well.

Exteriors

One of the easiest ways to allow sunlight into your home is to make sure nothing is obstructing it. If you have any bushes, trees or shrubbery around your windows, you should keep them trimmed and pruned. Keeping up with this maintenance sounds simple but is often an overlooked solution.
