The Bella Twins, formerly known as Nikki and Brie Bella, made their exit from World Wrestling Entertainment official on Wednesday. They will now go by different names and start “a new chapter.” The former professional wrestlers, TV personalities, and podcast hosts will now conduct business under their given names, Nikki and Brie Garcia. In the most recent episode of their podcast, “The Nikki & Brie Show,” the couple discussed why they had decided to leave WWE after 17 years.
“We are appreciative of the previous 17 years. I’ve gained a great deal of knowledge from that ring. I’ve been everywhere in the world. I have an amazing fan base that comes from more than 146 nations. And occasionally you reach a point in your life where you decide to part ways with someone. Although we don’t know if it will last forever, we just know that it is correct.” said the sisters.
According to Brie Garcia, the sisters had “thought about leaving WWE for a while,” and it “has been years coming.” The two women looked forward to realizing their full creative potential and expressed gratitude for their long-time alter egos.
The Garcia twins’ intentions for this year’s Wrestlemania, which is set to take place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on April 1 and 2, are unknown. On Wednesday, a WWE representative chose not to comment.
Brie Garcia remarked, “I just want to thank Brie Bella… the character that… I have been.” “I would like to express my gratitude to that name because it has greatly impacted both my life and the lives of many others, and it has done many wonderful things for me.”
Nikki Garcia echoed, saying, “I am so beyond grateful for Nikki Bella.” She gave me confidence. She inspired me. She gave me the courage I needed. And I discovered a great deal of what was within. It took Nikki Bella to rescue me from that person that I had lost. I will therefore always be appreciative of her and hold her in high regard.
The Bella Twins’ Professional Journey
The Bella Twins, Brie, and Nikki Bella are identical twin sisters who competed as a professional wrestling tag team for the WWE. The Bella Twins have all won WWE Divas Championships in the past. While Nikki won the title twice—her second reign of 301 days being the longest—Brie was the first twin to win the now-defunct title in the WWE.
In June 2007, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) signed The Bella Twins to developmental contracts. They were then placed in Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), which was WWE’s developmental territory in Tampa, Florida. The twins won their first match on September 14 when they faced off against Nattie Neidhart and Krissy Vaine, with Victoria Crawford serving as the special guest referee.
They traded places behind the referee’s back if any of them got hurt as part of their on-screen personas. The term for this was “Twin Magic”. On occasion, they would also participate in mixed tag matches, partnering with wrestlers who were male, such as Robert Anthony and Kofi Kingston. They also appeared on Heath Miller’s Happy Hour promo segment, but not in a wrestling capacity.
When the sisters joined the WWE in 2007, they were paired with Florida Championship Wrestling, a developmental division. In 2008, Brie Bella was promoted to the starting lineup. She secretly switched places with her sister to win matches in her early career. It was revealed that Nikki Bella was her twin after a few weeks.
Over the ensuing years, they collaborated as a group and independently. Before they were released in 2012, each sister had already won the WWE Divas Championship once. After making a comeback in 2013, the Bella Twins starred in the reality series Total Divas before launching their spin-off, Total Bellas.
As a group, they were admitted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021. The twins served as WWE brand ambassadors until their contracts expired in 2023, but they would only occasionally appear in the company’s final years. Since “Garcia” was their maiden name, they rebranded themselves as The Garcia Twins and retired the “Bella” moniker.
