The best way to learn about a country and its people is through its food. The food in Johor Bahru has always been highly recommended by me. Everyone knows that every country has several must-eat places, and Johor Bahru is one of them.

1.Kedai Masakan Itik Taika Huat

This stall is located in the middle of small housing areas. It has been operating since the 1970s. The second and third generations now run it. The stall is well-known among locals because it has walls covered in newspaper articles that feature their food. This speaks volumes about how delicious they are.

Taika Huat’s duck meat is tender and juicy after being braised for many hours. Enjoy it with a bowl kueh tiaw noodles or rice. Make sure you order one duck for every person. So you can enjoy all the delicious side dishes like braised tofu and beancurd, as well as their slow-cooked fermented vegetables. Yum!

2.Bukit Chagar Roti Canai

This quaint little stall is located near the immigration point and is always packed with customers. It’s easy to be surprised at the constant stream of people as you drive up, but once you try one of these rotis, it becomes obvious why they keep returning.

Since over 20 years, this family-owned business has been rolling dough by hand. Their method of flipping the dough gives it tons of air pockets. Because of the multiple layers, the roti cooks beautifully crispy on the outside and softens on the inside. Perfect for breaking apart with your hands! It’s perfect for tearing apart with your hands!

3.Restoran Kin Hua

Kin Hua kopitiam is a throwback back to simpler times. It is the type of place that you can remember from your childhood. It is known for its simple, but delicious food. You can find hearty Malaysian favorites like mee rebus and nasi siam, as well as a variety kuih, on the morning menu. They also offer their famous locally brewed coffee throughout the day.

Enjoy a lazy breakfast with your family and friends. Don’t forget Kin Hua’s signature specialty, kaya toast. Two slices of fresh toasted bread (or steam) are topped with kaya, and sandwiched with a little butter. Toast, some claim, is the best toast in town.

4.Ambang Pesona d’Cerry

Pokok Cerry is a local name for this roadside stall that serves some of the finest nasi lamak. Despite all the great nasi lamak, the sambal is what makes d’Cerry worth your time. It’s spicy but not too strong and slightly sweet. This goes well with aromatic nasi rice, cooked with coconut milk and herbs, and crispy pieces of freshly fried chicken.

You don’t have to eat a whole plate of rice if you don’t feel like eating a lot of it. There are many other options, such as soto ayam, which is a spicy chicken soup with noodles, or lontong rendangkering, which is a combination of fragrant rice cakes, curried meat, and vegetables, all served in a peanut sauce. Enjoy one of these hearty dishes with a cup of hot teh-tarik ‘pulled’ in the traditional manner to get your day off to a good start.

5.Hiap Joo Bakery

A bakery is located in the middle of Johor City. It has maintained its traditional baking methods and has avoided modern technology. Hiap Joo bakes all of their products in a wood-burning oven, which may be the secret to their success. The little bakery is bustling every morning with bakers rushing to get banana cakes out of the oven and packing them up as quickly as possible. Although their filled buns, especially the coconut ones, are delicious, what most people want is a box full of moist, flavorful banana cake.

After a long day of exploration, stop by to grab a bite or two. We all know how difficult it is to stop at just one. It won’t be hard to regret.

6.Kerala Curry House

The Malaysian staple of diet is banana leaf rice. Kerala Curry House is the best place to find it. Their motto is “Kerala- The sign of a good curries” and it’s what they are best known for. When you think about it, you’ll be salivating at the hot and spicy fish, chicken, and mutton curry.

As the waitresses serve you a bowl with crispy poppadum, sit down and enjoy a bowl. Then pile on your vegetables and rice. The mutton curry they serve is deliciously spiced. It almost crumbles when you pick it apart because it has been cooked so long. You should also try one of their fish cutlets, which are fried fish cakes made with herbs or spices.

You really can’t miss these famous local delicacies in Johor Bahru! SGMYTRIPS provides SG JB taxi service with more than 80 MPVs per day, they are more affordable and efficient than any other similar platform. And you can also take their private car from Singapore to Legoland. No matter where you want to go, our professional and experienced drivers will take you door-to-door to your destination!
