Straw Hat Luffy, aka Monkey D. Luffy, is the primary character and the face of the One Piece series. As the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, he seeks to become the Pirate King by locating the One Piece treasure. In addition, he is the adopted younger brother of Portgas D. Ace and Sabo, the grandson of Monkey D. Garp, and the son of Monkey D. Dragon. After Big Mom and Kaido were defeated, respectively, Luffy and his adversaries Shanks, Blackbeard, and Buggy were formally crowned Emperors of the Sea of the modern era. In the Japanese version of the anime, Urara Takano and Mayumi Tanaka provide his voices, while in the English version, Erica Schroeder, Chuck Powers, and Colleen Clinkenbeard do the same.
Background
As the adopted younger brother of the late Portgas D. Ace and the revolutionary Sabo, Monkey D. Luffy is the son of Monkey D in the One Piece Series. Dragon and the grandson of Monkey D. Garp. In addition, he is currently a member of the Four Emperors and the romantic interest of former Warlord Boa Hancock. He was born into a nameless woman and Monkey D. Dragon in the Goa Kingdom. But for unclear reasons, he was raised by his grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, without knowing the truth about his parents.
Luffy’s grandfather, Garp, brutally trained him to become a strong man despite his young age by throwing him into a bottomless ravine, abandoning him in the jungle every night, and tying him up with balloons to send him skyward. Luffy was left to train alongside Ace and Sabo, his brothers. The Bluejam Pirates were the first pirates they faced off against. Following Sabo’s disappearance, which was caused by the World Noble shooting him out of resentment, he punched one of them in the Sabaody Archipelago. He spent three years learning how to control his devil fruit powers after Ace left when he was fourteen years old, and then he left to become a pirate.
His primary goal is to become the Pirate King, and he is currently looking for the One Piece, a fabled treasure that Gold Roger, the previous Pirate King, is said to have left behind. He was inspired by a group of other pirates, led by “Red-Haired” Shanks, who used to come to his island as a young boy.
He unintentionally consumed the Gum-Gum Fruit (ゴムゴムの実, Gomu Gomu no mi), a kind of Devil Fruit, which turned his body into rubber during one of the pirate crew’s visits. The drawback to possessing these abilities is being unable to swim; anyone who consumes a Devil Fruit will perish if they fall into the water.
Characteristics
Luffy is a young boy in his teens with short, untidy black hair, black eyes, and fair skin. He cut himself under the eye with a knife, leaving a scar beneath his left eye. At the Battle of Marineford, he suffered severe injuries from Akainu, which left an X-shaped scar on his chest. His go-to straw hat (a gift from Red-Haired Shanks), a red sleeveless vest with three buttons, short blue pants with white cuffs, and light brown sandals with black straps make up his main ensemble. He dresses in an open, long-sleeved red cardigan with four buttons and a yellow sash knotted around his waist after the time skip. He still wears his signature straw hat, sandals, and short blue pants.
Strengths
Immensely Strong:
Luffy has developed into one of the world’s most formidable pirates since joining the Four Emperors. Given his bounty of 3,000,000,000, he is regarded as one of the biggest threats to the functioning of the World Government. When Luffy confronts Rob Lucci, his former adversary, in Egghead, he demonstrates his superior strength over the CP0 agent. The Admiral declared Luffy’s strength to be formidable during his battle with Kizaru because he had defeated Kaido. Since he is the first to hurt Borsalino, he can hurt Kizaru.
Transformation:
Luffy has repeatedly shown that he can become stronger while battling his opponents. Examples of this include developing his Second and Third Gears and discovering new ways to use his long-thought-to-be useless Gomu Gomu no Mi. This is further demonstrated after the two-year time skip when he masters Haki and overcomes the extreme weaknesses of both Gears, which render him vulnerable and make him normal. If the Sea Kings hadn’t stopped it themselves, he could have nearly destroyed the entire Noah, a massive ship half the size of Fishman Island, while he was bleeding out.
Attacking Style
Master Hand-to-Hand Fighting: Thanks to his Gomu Gomu no Mi, which makes him into a rubber man, and his extraordinary physical prowess, Luffy’s fighting style has proven to be incredibly flexible and adaptable. Luffy has demonstrated that he is capable of fighting against martial arts experts like Rob Lucci, even though, unlike Zoro and Sanji, his fighting style is largely self-taught and improvised.
Intelligence: Despite his simple-mindedness, he possesses at least a basic understanding of his Gomu Gomu no Mi, which endows him with natural insulation and rubber qualities. This allows him to repel Enel’s lightning-based attacks without missing a single one, as he is impervious to attacks based on electricity. Luffy could learn techniques like Second and Third Gear. In the former, he increases blood flow through his rubber blood vessels, giving him more oxygen and nutrients and increasing his speed and power. In the latter, he bites into his fingers to inflate his arm and bones, making his arm giant and increasing his damage output.
Better stamina: Luffy possesses exceptional stamina as well. Despite being full from eating biscuits, he managed to fight Cracker for eight hours. In addition, he played against Katakuri for 12 hours straight after getting little sleep the previous three days, getting hurt multiple times by Cracker, Sanji, and the Furious Army, and going nearly starving during that time.
Agility: Luffy also demonstrates remarkable agility, demonstrating the ability to roll, dodge, and flip. Luffy’s ability to respond to enemies such as Kuro, Arlong, Bellamy, and Enel faster than he can is demonstrated early in the series.
Healing: He is known for his quick recovery and possesses great healing powers. In Impel Down, Luffy’s natural healing powers were enhanced by Ivankov’s healing hormones and further strengthened by his willpower. This allowed him to not only survive the lethal dose of Magellan’s poisoning but also to recover from it in less than a day, an achievement that Ivankov considered more than miraculous.
Luffy keeps his word quite firmly, even if it means suffering personal harm. Despite his assurance to Nami that he wouldn’t cause any trouble in Mock Town, he did nothing but let Zoro and the Bellamy Pirates beat him up. That does not imply that he will not keep his word; rather, he has only done so in situations where doing so would go against his moral principles, like getting even with a friend who has offended him. He is not only respectful and mature but also stubborn. Throughout the series, Luffy has grown more composed and mature; however, he only displays these traits when he and his friends find themselves in dangerous situations or when someone calls him and his beliefs stupid. Luffy feels that regardless of the deceased person’s identity, no one should be made fun of their passing. Overall, the character is seen as a humble, kind & strong character who has an impactful personality and a never giving up kind of attitude.
