OnePlus has added more devices to its Nord Core Edition lineup. In the nation, it introduced the 5G-enabled OnePlus Nord CE 2. It was introduced to further solidify the company’s hold on the sub-25K market, which has seen rapid expansion in recent years. In terms of features and specifications, the Nord CE 2 is an improvement over its predecessor. Does it have enough features to be your daily smartphone, even though its starting price is Rs. 24k? Let’s read

Verdict

The Nord CE 2 5G has a great design, a nice appearance, and excellent ratings for features like battery life and UI. That being said, performance aficionados may find it wanting, and the cameras also need some work. It’s also frustrating because there are no stereo speakers. However, you can use the memory expansion slot and 3.5mm headphone connector without sacrificing dual-SIM capabilities. All things considered, this phone is worthy of further examination, but not until you consider all of your options.

Design and display

Choosing a more understated style over some of the more ostentatious styles we’ve seen from other brands, the Nord CE2 opts for elegance over flamboyance. The phone is subtle and may not catch people’s attention right away, but the color is pleasant and young—I have the Bahama Blue model. The phone takes design inspiration from the OPPO Reno7 5G (review) in several aspects.

It has a front-facing flat screen and a glass back that gently curves to fit into the frame. The camera module is housed in an intriguing-looking hump that feels and looks like glass, while the polycarbonate rear is simple, with the OnePlus logo placed in the center. The aforementioned module features two sizable camera sensors that are easily visible, along with a smaller one and a flash on the side.

Design and display

A power key is located on the right spine, and the SIM tray and individual volume controls are located on the left. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first OnePlus phone to support both a microSD card and two nano-SIMs in the same SIM tray. A Type-C port, a speaker, and mercifully a 3.5mm headset socket are located at the bottom. Stereo speakers are a disappointment to be missing from the phone, especially because most phones in a range of pricing points do include them.

The iconic alert slider key from OnePlus is also absent from the equation. Overall, the device seems quite well-built and, in the hand, compared to its asking price, giving the impression that it is more expensive. It is lightweight, thin, and only 7.8 mm in length. I also like that OnePlus includes a strong-looking case and a screen protector pre-installed in the box, so you can use the phone worry-free right away.

The phone has an AMOLED 6.43-inch Full HD display with a 20:9 aspect ratio and a refresh rate of 90 Hz on the front. For safety, it has Gorilla Glass 5 placed on top, and it is also HDR10+ certified. With features like dark mode, an eye comfort mode, warm and cold colour temperatures, and the ability to adjust the screen to vivid or sRGB, OnePlus lets you customise it to your taste. It has the always-on display function and allows you to change the font’s size and style. Three of the sides have thin bezels, but the bottom chin is substantially wider. A fingerprint scanner is placed beneath the display, and there is a punch hole for the front shooter on the left corner. The display brightens up enough to provide you a good viewing experience for whatever you’re doing on your phone. It’s important to note that Netflix cannot be streamed in HDR on the phone. Nonetheless, streaming HDR videos from YouTube functions flawlessly.

Cameras

Now let’s move on to the snappers. A 64MP, f/1.8 primary sensor paired with an 8MP ultra-wide and a 2MP macro is available. The primary camera produces excellent images, particularly during the day.

Cameras

The photos have a great dynamic range, are detailed, and maintain true-to-life colour. Though there is considerable visible noise, the 8MP ultra-wide sensor produces decent images. The focus tends to become muddy on the sides, but exposure control is respectable and there isn’t much distortion around the borders.

Review of the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G: Functionality

The 8-core, reliable MediaTek Immensity 900 SoC powers the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G. It has a maximum of 128GB UFS 2.2 storage capacity and up to 8GB RAM, so I had enough of room to save all of my crucial data and papers. The smartphone operates at a good speed thanks to its CPU and RAM combination. Applications opened and loaded quite quickly. I had no lags or stutters when using four to six apps at once. Playing games at medium graphics quality is fine, but it does become a touch hot after a while. It was easy to listen to music, read the news, and use an e-commerce app because the device operated without any problems.

The following results were obtained from benchmark tests conducted on the OnePlus Nord CE 2: o Geekbench 5 single core: 723; o Geekbench 5 multi-core: 2133; o AnTuTu: 430,290

It is disappointing that the device is still running Android 11 with Oxygen OS 11.3, but on the plus side, it is covered by three years of security patches and two major OS updates. It’s a comfort that the current OS doesn’t contain a lot of bloatware or spammy notifications. Because it permits a wide range of personalization and customizations, the OS experience might be characterized as fluid. Since there were no obtrusive advertisements, the user interface was rather simple and uncluttered. Netflix and Spotify are the two third-party apps that come pre-installed.

There is a triple card slot in the connectivity section that holds a microSD and twin SIM card. It features a USB Type-C port for charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack, 5G connection, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and Wi-Fi 6.

The smartphone just has one bottom-firing speaker, and while dual speakers are now standard on most handsets, I did miss having one. Although the speaker’s sound quality is average, there is some distortion audible at high volumes. Even in a crowded area, I was able to hear the person on the other end because to the excellent Nord CE 2 earpiece.

Final Verdict

The OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G’s problem is that, especially when compared to competitors, it falls short in the essential smartphone functions. In terms of cameras, the Realme 9 Pro+ (review) is superior, although the Mi 11X (review) may perform better. In this price bracket, the Xiaomi 11i is a notable competitor as well; but, if you slightly increase your budget, you can also purchase the Nord 2 (review) or even the iQOO 7 (review). Nevertheless, the Nord CE 2 offers reasonable performance, good daylight photography, and a fair battery life, all housed in an aesthetically pleasing and well-built design. When you combine the abundance of customization choices with a simple interface, you have an alternative that is worth giving another look.

Pros:

  • Good build quality and aesthetics; • Bloatware-free, clean user interface; • Capable primary camera; • Long battery life and quick 65W charging

Cons:

  • Stereo speakers are missing; • Low-light camera performance should be improved; • Performance falls short of competitors ‘Absent Android 12
