Zodiac salt cells are a popular choice for pool owners who want the convenience of automatic chlorination without the hassles of using chlorine tablets or liquid bleach. They use a process called electrolysis to turn dissolved salt in the water into free chlorine, which sanitizes the pool. With proper care and maintenance, a Zodiac salt cell can provide many years of reliable service. Here are some tips for getting the most life out of your Zodiac salt cell.

Clean the Cell Regularly

Over time, scale and calcium deposits can build up on the electrolytic plates inside the salt cell. This prevents the system from operating efficiently. To maintain optimal performance, the salt cell needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. Zodiac recommends soaking the cell in a dilute muriatic acid solution for a few hours several times during the pool season. How often you need to clean depends on how hard your water is. For very hard water, monthly cleanings may be needed.

Inspect and Replace Rubber Seals

The salt cell is contained in a housing with rubber gaskets and seals. Make sure these components remain in good shape, with no cracks or deterioration. Replace any worn or damaged rubber parts right away to prevent leaks and damage to the cell. Lubricate the seals with a non-petroleum product when reassembling.

Add Salt as Needed

For proper electrolysis, the pool water needs to maintain a specific salt concentration. This is usually between 2700-3400 PPM. Test the water regularly and add salt as needed to keep levels in the ideal range. Adding the right amount of salt prevents overloading the cell.

Use Proper Cell Voltage

The Zodiac salt chlorinator should be set to run at the proper voltage range. This ensures the most efficient electrolysis reaction. Setting the voltage too low can result in reduced chlorine output, while setting it too high may potentially harm the cell. To determine the appropriate voltage settings, refer to your user manual. Use a multimeter to verify that the input voltage matches the specified setting.

Inspect Electrical Connections

Corroded or loose wiring connections can affect voltage delivery to the cell. This leads to inconsistent chlorine production. Periodically inspect the electrolytic cell housing for any moisture or oxidation on electrical contacts. Tighten any loose wiring connections and replace any damaged wires.

Winterise Properly

In cold climates, the salt chlorinator and cell need special attention before winter to prevent damage. Follow the manufacturer’s winterising steps exactly. This usually involves draining water from the housing, disconnecting the cell, and rinsing with a descaler solution. Store the cell safely in a location where it won’t be exposed to freezing temperatures during the winter months. Proper winter care will add years to your salt cell’s lifespan.

By performing regular maintenance and following the manufacturer’s recommendations, you can enjoy an extended lifespan from your Zodiac salt chlorinator cell. Consistently cleaning, winterising, and safeguarding the unit will help maintain its optimal performance, ensuring worry-free and automatic chlorination for your pool. In case you encounter any difficulties, check your model’s manual or seek advice from a pool expert. With diligent care, your salt chlorinator cell will continue to deliver clean and refreshing pool water each season.
