In 2020, Xiaomi released the first smartphone with a graphene battery, followed by long discussions about Apple releasing an iPhone with said battery. But it’s only a matter of time till the market is filled with smartphones with graphene batteries.
2.Bye-Bey Bezel
Screens are only getting bigger, and it’s not going to stop any time soon. Why would it stop? So, the bezel must go. There are various things that can be made about it. Xiaomi and Samsung have already presented several models with under-the-display cameras. Although, it came at the cost of the quality of the images. But thanks to technological advances, the front camera cutout may go away without sacrificing the quality of your selfies. But it’s not the said cutout that should go away.
The idea of a bezel-less screen became evident after the release of the iPhone X in 2017 when Apple showed wonders of the bezel button minimization. The bottom bezel button is gone, but the upper bezel still remains. But give it a year or two, and the bezel-less display will surely hit the market.
3.Wireless Charging
Since 2020, Samsung and Google have started exploring wireless charging. Samsung Galaxy S series and all of its successors offer both wired and wireless charging. Thanks to inductive charging, you no longer have to struggle with wires. However, it still takes a bit longer compared to standard USB charges. But things change drastically pretty fast.
Wireless charging means that you need to keep your phone on the charging surface. While truly wireless, it’s not as great as over-the-air charging, which unfortunately failed so far. Yes, the idea of your phone getting charged regardless of the place, even while you’re using it, is great, but it’s just 5W charging. So, until it becomes a mainstream thing, we are left with inductive wireless charging.
4.Farewell to Relics
No matter how bizarre it sounds, SIM cards are still a thing. Yes, manufacturers made tons of efforts to minimize their size, but it still feels like something from the past. Considering the fact that, thanks to Apple and Google Pay, fewer people are using physical credit and debit cards. The idea that you still need a physical SIM card seems a bit ridiculous. But things are about to change.
In September 2022, during a press event, Apple announced that it was ditching the SIM cards for its upcoming iPhone 14 release. Instead of a standard physical SIM card, you will have its digital counterpart integrated into your phone. It may seem a bit wary, as we tend to switch cards when we switch providers. Just like with its physical counterpart, you can switch plans, providers, and networks, but you are no longer required to do it physically. So, whenever you want to change the plan or set a local number when traveling abroad, you can do all that without requesting a new SIM card. Unlike some entries on the list, it’s not something that may become a thing soon. It’s going to become a thing already in 2023.
5.Photonic Displays
Smartphone screens can display vast arrays of saturated colors, but they are still not that great at adapting to light conditions. But things may change thanks to the photonic crystal displays, which can adapt to the light conditions of the environment they are in. And they can be easily integrated into smartphones. So you no longer will have problems with reflections on your display.
So, how long do we have to wait till the technology hits the market? Hopefully not be that long, as both Apple and Google have been investing in photonics development for the past decade. Samsung, on the other hand, presented the concept of a photonic crystal display all the way back in 2013. Thus, we have a good chance that smartphones with this light-adapting display will hit the market in the 2020s.
