There are a lot of things to keep in notice when going to shop for a gaming monitor.

  • Refresh rate.
  • Response time.
  • Contrast ratios.
  • Color.
  • Build quality.

And the list goes on. But most of the factors you want in your monitor depend upon the type of panel you use. So, to pick up the best you should know which type of panel brings what qualities to make it easy to find a perfect monitor for your gaming.

So, in this writing, I am going to tell you what IPS, TM, and VA offer. Their limitations and advantages and why IPS is best out of all of them.

IPS

IPS means in-plane switching.

ADVANTAGES

IPS is actually the panel used by many monitors and smartphones. If you see a display with good viewing angles and vibrant colors just guess it uses IPS.

It is because IPS is known to have the best and most accurate color reproduction and the best viewing angles as well as great contrast ratios.

LIMITATION

IPS has limited response time and refresh rate.

Usually IPS has a refresh rate of 60 Hz and response time of 4 milliseconds.

Refresh rates are not that much of an issue as refresh rates more than 60 Hertz are possible but it gets a little pricey.

But manufacturers are getting better at it now. IPS has some models with good refresh rates and response time too.

TN

TN stands for twisted-nematic. They are somewhat the polar opposite of IPS.

ADVANTAGES

They offer the best refresh times and lowest response time as 1 millisecond. They are the fastest and also the cheapest panels to manufacture. 144Hertz are common response times in TN panels.

LIMITATIONS

The visual quality isn’t that good. The colors that appear on TN panels are washed out and the viewing angles are also poor. Also, they don’t support HDR so they may be good in terms of speed and are cheap. You can’t totally enjoy the good quality pixels and viewing angles. So, if you want to play with less money TN panels can be your go-to. As they are cheap, but they don’t usually have a good quality display.

VA

VA stands for vertical alignment.  VA represents a middle ground between IPS and TA.  And theoretically good for users who want good quality and speed as well. Do note the word theoretically.  They have good video quality, good pixels and good viewing angles as compared to IPS and have a good response time of 1 millisecond and refresh rate of 144 Hertz too.

Now, you must be thinking that this is all you want. Well, think twice.

LIMITATIONS

VA has a lot of problems with ghosting and backlight bleeding. Ghosting is something you most definitely don’t want. If you are a fast pace gamer. And backlight bleeding is somewhat more than an inconvenience. And is very annoying. So, it is okay for gaming but they are not like the best. As a jack-of-all-trades is a master of none.

WHY IPS?

Now, if you compare all three of them.

REASON NO 1

IPS panels have very good viewing angles, very different from others and a lot better. TN can’t offer this quality. They can’t offer good viewing angles.

REASON NO 2

Their good viewing angles make them good with color production. A good view is very important for gamers, personally for me it is the greatest of all the qualities I would want in my gaming monitor. A good display makes a good player. You can only enjoy your games with a good display. Which, you can’t get with TN. They have very good black reproduction making them better than TN with the effect of washed-out color.

REASON NO 3

High refresh rates are usually more associated with TN panels but IPS are now getting better at that too. Now, there are panels with 240 Hertz refresh rates. Yes, they are a bit expensive but I think they are worth it with the quality they provide. There is an IPS panel with 1 millisecond of response time too.

The disadvantages VA offer, competitive gamers should avid VA panels. They can be really annoying.

REASON NO 4

No matter what TN and VA can’t compete with the contrast and color reproduction IPS offers.

With all the disadvantages and the advantages discussed, IPS are the best.

It has almost all the qualities you want in your gaming monitor. IPS glow can be the one issue you hear about it but it can only be visible from a certain angle so in my opinion that can’t be an issue.
