Saraswati Pooja Day also known as Basant Panchami is celebrated all across India to worship the Goddess Saraswati and is falling on the 14th of February in 2024.

Basant Panchami is celebrated to worship the Goddess Saraswati who is the goddess of knowledge, education, and information according to Hindu Mythology on the day of Saraswati Pooja which is on the 14th of February this year. It is believed that praying to the Goddess of knowledge with dedication and devotion can help to illuminate the path of knowledge. Today devotees from all around the world are celebrating Basant Panchami. Some are taking dips in the holy rivers and offering prayers at Ghats like Dadhashwamedh in Uttar Pradesh.  This festival also marks the fifth day of spring which coincidences with the fifth day of the month of Magha in the Hindu Calendar. It marks the ascent of spring and holds a significant place in the Hindu tradition and culture. 

History behind Saraswati Pooja

The festival of Basant Panchami has a major historical significance in mythology and legend. A popular tale surrounding the festival recounts the transformation of the famous poet Kalidasa. He was despondent over the misfortunes in his life and is said to be visited by the Goddess Saraswati herself. Her divine intervention inspired the poet to bathe in the sacred river which led to his enlightenment and the blossoming of his poetic talents. 

Another tale recounts a narrative of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, where the arrival of spring prompts the rekindling of love and rejuvenation of life. 

What is the significance of Saraswati Pooja?

Basant Panchami is synonymous with the yellow color which symbolizes the vibrancy of spring and the blossoming of the fields of mustard. This festival honors the Goddess of information whose blessings are sought by artists, scholars, and students. They hope the Goddess will guide and inspire them in their pursuit of knowledge and creativity. It is common to observe yellow attire, yellow traditional foods, and offering yellow flowers and sweets to celebrate the festival which highlights the association of the festival with enlightenment and intellect.
