Everything and everyone is evolving and synchronizing with the modern digital age era.

The same is the case with Indian Postal Department. They have launched officially DigiPIN on May 27, 2025 to identify the precise location of residences and companies.

What is DigiPIN?

It is a revolutionary 10-digit digital addressing system. It aims to digitally complement the conventional six-digit PIN codes.

While PIN codes cover large areas, it identifies locations within a 4×4 meter grid. The system employs accurate latitude and longitude coordinates.

It was established in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre. The objective is to improve accuracy for deliveries and services, as reported by Livemint.

How It Works

It gives each 4×4 meter square in India a unique 10-character alphanumeric code. Each code is based on geospatial information. Users can create their DigiPIN through the “Know Your DigiPIN” portal at https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home.

Just enter an address or use GPS to obtain the code. The open-source system ensures privacy since it does not retain personal information. It allows offline usage, making it available in remote places, as per India Today.

Advantages of DigiPIN

The DigiPIN system has revolutionized logistics and emergency services. It facilitates accurate last-mile delivery in e-commerce. Emergency response teams, such as ambulances, are able to pinpoint addresses quicker.

Rural and unstructured spaces are most aided, where conventional addresses are not clear. It also aids in smart city initiatives and digital governance.

Its convergence with the National Geospatial Policy 2022 further increases its scope, as reported by CNBC TV18.

Existing in tandem with PIN Codes

DigiPIN will not entirely replace the “six-digit PIN code” system. Rather, it is a complement for “additional precision.”

The old PIN system, in operation since 1972, has been enhanced with geofencing. The “Know Your PIN Code” portal enables PIN codes to be validated with accuracy.

Both systems complement each other to enhance addressing, according to Business Standard.

A Step Towards Digital India

DigiPIN is a building block of Address-as-a-Service (AaaS). It facilitates smooth integration with government and private sector processes. The open-source code of the system on GitHub facilitates collaboration.

Vandita Kaul, Department of Posts Secretary, underlined its digital transformation role. “DigiPIN makes each citizen digitally locatable,” she added. It assures to simplify services in urban and rural India.

As India continues to digitize its infrastructure, DigiPIN represents a smarter jump towards the more efficient future in public services, logistics and digital identity.
