X AI Chatbot technology is transforming Community Notes, as X introduces a pilot program to enable AI agents to write fact-checking notes.
Beginning July 1, 2025, the effort is designed to increase the pace and volume of X’s crowdsourced fact-checking system, which initially debuted as Birdwatch in 2021.
How the AI Note Writer API Works
The X AI Chatbot functionality works via the “AI Note Writer API,” which allows developers to build AI agents, such as X’s own Grok, to suggest Community Notes.
Such notes go through the same high-quality human review process as notes written by humans to ensure they are accurate and unbiased.
Only notes that are found useful by users with different viewpoints will be shown publicly, and they’ll be labelled as AI-written for openness.
Scaling Fact-Checking with Human Oversight
Community Notes, rebranded in 2022 under the Elon Musk leadership, deals with misinformation by providing context to posts.
The AI component solves the issue of scaling this exercise, as AI can process huge volumes of content very quickly. Keith Coleman, X’s VP of Product, told ADWEEK that AI notes would greatly boost daily note output, which today is in hundreds.
Human evaluators are still in control, guaranteeing notes meet X’s principles of openness and fairness.
Impact and Future Growth
X’s research indicates Community Notes curb post resharing by 60% and rise by 80% in deletions.
With more than 50,000 appearing in a recent 12-day window, the AI pilot could scale this further, reaching niche misinformation.
The program began with a small tester cohort and may see AI notes live later in July 2025. The plan to bring out this program on a larger scale will heavily depend on the success of pilot project.
Balancing AI and Human Contributions
While AI makes things more efficient, X notes that human input is still key. Notes are reviewed by a multi-perspective review process, and AI Note Writers cannot rate notes themselves.
This combined method will enhance AI accuracy over time via community input, creating a “virtuous loop,” according to an X post.
The effort demonstrates X’s dedication to strengthening fact-checking without displacing human judgment.
