Social media is a social phenomenon that has taken over the internet. Every day, people are spending more and more time on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

Social media managers are in charge of managing social media for companies or individuals to make sure their content gets seen by as many people as possible. Unfortunately, social media management can be hazardous to your health as it takes its toll physically and mentally on you.

Any social media agency Sydney would agree that it’s a fun job—but it isn’t devoid of dangers. Let’s discuss what occupational hazards social media managers face and how to avoid them.

  • Social media managers are required to spend most of their day on social media sites, which is very time-consuming and can lead to social internet addiction.
  • Social media managers may have a hard time separating work from personal life because they’re constantly thinking about social media.
  • If you’re working for someone else as a social manager, it’s difficult not being able to control your own schedule or the content that you post. You could be posting something that might offend people or just doesn’t go with what your company represents.

That would also mean having less freedom when it comes down to scheduling posts in order to reach more people during certain days/times of day (e.g., Facebook ads only run on weekdays between 12pm – 11pm EST).

  • Social media managers can experience burnout due to the constant need for social interaction. It’s important not to overwork yourself or check social media too much because it will make you feel like there’s always something new that needs your attention (e.g., checking socials every hour, constantly posting on social media instead of taking breaks, etc.).

These are some reasons why social media management could be hazardous! Because of these risks, what should a person do if they want to become a social manager?

There are things you can do!

You should definitely try out managing someone else’s account before you even think about doing this as a full-time job. Sometimes being an intern at a company is good enough—just so you know how everything works and have firsthand experience with different social media sites.

If you’re a social media manager, you should definitely try to detach yourself from social media when you’re not working in order to avoid social internet addiction and separation anxiety! Unplugging from social media when not working is important to your mental health and well-being.

One of the best ways to avoid or minimize these occupational hazards is to take breaks. Take a break every hour, and try not to spend more than four hours on social media in one sitting. If you’re feeling burned out, close your computer for an evening. It may be time for some introspection about what’s making you unhappy with work so that it doesn’t happen again!

Another great idea is getting outside daily—even if it’s just taking 10 minutes at lunchtime when possible. What are your favorite ways to reduce stress? Let us know in the comments below!
